Article Text:

Are you an experienced internet marketer with dozens of niche sites, a business with one main website, or a complete novice who is trying to make some part-time cash from a little affiliate marketing? Whatever the case it should be crystal clear that the name of the game is to attract visitors to your site and then get them to purchase one of your products or promotions.

Driving traffic to your website involves writing in a style that specifically targets the search engine robots. Once you become aware of the things the robots are most likely looking for, it becomes quite an easy process to construct your body copy in a way that ticks all the boxes in this regard.

Be aware however that you should be communicating, not just with robots, but with potential customers. It is therefore of equal importance that your articles or copy read well for humans and better still if it offers the visitor a valuable experience. Striking the balance between search engine robot speak and the script that is aimed at human consumption, is not always easy. Get it right and you could see the money roll in, get it wrong and you probably won't make a dime. It's that important.

Let's first take a look at writing for your visitors. Just think how people read websites. Most of the time the article or sales copy is simply scanned very rapidly. If there is nothing which grabs the reader's attention as they scroll down rapidly or click hurriedly through various pages of your site then in just a matter of seconds they will have moved on leaving your site, never to return. You need to grab their attention by using various techniques that will lead them away from this scan and click mentality.

Your writing needs to have some sort of structure, headings and subheadings with bold and under-linings are a good idea. Write short paragraphs, leaving gaps between the paragraphs and make sure your writing is grammatically correct. Bullet points are a great idea and as such a better way to write this paragraph could be as follows:

• Use headings and subheadings
• Use bold
• Use underlining
• Use short paragraphs
• Use grammatically correct writing
• Use bullet points

You might also like to consider how you add links, both internal and external, as well as your use of anchor text.

• Use links, both internal and external
• Use anchor text carefully

Notice how the list of bullet points above was broken up with a sentence which makes the list a little easier to read.

So hopefully you will make your pages reader friendly but this will be to no avail if no one visits your site to read them. So the second part of the process is to make sure that you are also writing for the search engine robots.

Writing for the robots is really called SEO (search engine optimization). This part of the writing, whether it is an attempt at attracting organic traffic or paid for traffic, involves the research and use of keyword phrases relevant to your product and site.

The first step in this process is to choose a keyword selector tool to help you locate popular but relevant keywords to your site. These tools can also help deduce the levels of competition that certain keywords and phrases have from other sites.

I would recommend that each article on your website targets only one or two of these keyword phrases that your tools have indicated are lucrative phrases to use. The keyword phrase should be used in the title and throughout the copy of the article. Don't overdo it however. I keep the keyword density to around 3% if possible. Any more could damage the readability of the page and may be considered as spamming. Your site would sink without trace if this was the case.

Also consider that the robots like content rich sites with a lot of well constructed sentences and paragraphs which seems to be in conflict with the requirements for a visitor friendly site which may use bullet points for example. Get a good mix in your article if you possibly can.

I would suggest using your keyword phrase in the opening sentence of the article or copy. Indeed perhaps the opening words could be the keyword phrase you are targeting. I also use the keyword phrase in the final sentence of the script I'm writing.

Offline SEO techniques such as creating back links are not dealt with in this article. I have just concerned myself with the in-line techniques which involve your writing style and keyword use.

Getting the balance right between an article that grabs a visitor's attention and is easy to read yet at the same time ticks all the boxes for the search engine robots is not always easy to do. However the more you write such articles the better you get. You won't always get this delicate balance as you would like, but don't give up. Keep practising and fine tuning and sooner or later you will start to see results. Just remember, it is possible to attract lots of visitors by having a high ranking site and then keep them interested long enough for them to make a purchase.
