Description:

The study by the Centre for Retail Research on behalf of price comparison service Kelkoo showed Britons splashed out £38 billion on purchases made over the web last year - and the figure is expected to grow by 12.4 per cent to £42.7 billion in 2010.

Internet marketing services appear to be generating greater confidence in shopping on the web, as the number of people who spent over £1,000 on a single internet purchase rose from 12 per cent in 2008 to 25 per cent last year, the BBC reports.

In total, online purchases accounted for 9.5 per cent of all British retail sales during 2009.

Kelkoo managing director Bruce Fair said: "This year is when we will really start to see online sales achieving a significant share of overall retail trade in the UK."

According to the report, internet sales across Europe as a whole are forecast to grow by 19.6 per cent this year to top £152.8 billion.
