Its a base... not much to tell, it is sometimes good, sometimes bad.

The worst base I’ve ever been to from housing to medical to access to maintenance to about just anything..Housing:They’re always working on pipes throughout the neighborhood causing flood puddles in yards,weed grow as tall as the fence even when sprayed,flooring feels like you’re going to cave in one day due to foundation issues,bugs out of this world even when Terminix has sprayed. Medical:No doctors are ever available meaning either they’ve PCS or retired which caused a lot of backed up appointments pending until 2 months later is when your appointment is available. Access:3 operable gates with housing all the way on the other end common sense would be to have the main gate where housing is because the ARCENT gate closes at 6 I believe and the 441 gate to housing closes at 10 p.m which means if you’re coming back in town late through Columbia you will have to drive all the way to the main gate just to drive to the other side for housing. Maintenance:Any issues in the house it takes them forever to repair which means they will start,stop,start,stop,start,stop and then finish also pops up at the house no call,etc.to schedule a time for them to come by.If I could give this base no star I would.

The Air Force Soldiers are very professional with their big guns and boots ohhhhh and little hats at the gate. All the little Air Force Soldiers are just so strong looking and awesome with there heavy duty military boots! Also they get to zip around in there fast planes doing loop de loops!

I was stationed there from '85--'93 and '96-'07 and retired locally. I consider it an excellent location IF you aren't looking for culture or night life, but if you cared about that you wouldn't have taken your chances by enlisting in the first place or would have homesteaded in Europe or the Far East! It's a good location to be a motorcyclist or general gearhead. I give it four stars because no base is worthy of five. I never lived in base housing nor would I in CONUS but the replacements are nicer than the ancient Wherry housing they demo'ed a while back. There are plenty of off-base rental options.

First off...I LOVE Shaw AFB, SC! I was stationed at Shaw, when I was AD back in the 80's-90's...and I loved the base and the area!! As a matter of fact, I loved it so much, in my earlier professional career, that I put in for Shaw as a DOD gov't employee!! Like I said...I love everything about this base!! I hope to finish my professional federal career right here at Shaw AFB, SC! Go Gamecocks!!

My husband was stationed at Shaw about 55 years ago. Trust me. It wasn't any better then. The re-up rate was 0.8% when he got out in 1964.
