My wife, Patty & I have just celebrated our 45th anniversary with the Conklin Company. I began working part time as a independent manufacturer's rep for them while in graduate school in 1974 and have enjoyed an amazing career with them. My son, Jordan is now working with our business and the future of the Conklin Company looks bright. They offer over 200 different products in 6 divisions that they manufacture and ship direct to their independent distributors and customers nationwide. Positives? It's great to be independent and basically set your own hours & indirectly your own level of earnings. It is a simple business where you earn a straight commission on accounts developed & sales generated. We have dozens of our top level Independent Field Managers that earn $100,000-$400,000+ annually in commission income across the U.S. The Bright Spot at the Conklin Company is our Building Products Division that grew by over 40% in 2018.. thanks to a high level of support by a great staff, the addition of a world class training facility for our commercial roofing contractors, 40+ years or producing superior roofing systems and most importantly a better leader than we've ever had for this division in the person of Beau McCoy.Negatives? As an IBO (Independent Business Owner) and Field Manager you are in a partnership with the Conklin Company & have no control over pricing, margins, commission rates, if products you've been marketing are dropped or registration in a state you've been marketing in are not renewed. The support at the corporate level is limited or some of the best products that sell in much smaller quantities. Policy changes can challenge an independent field manager's long range planning for his distribution network.My 45+ years have been positive and our business has grown significantly but it is frustrating to weather some of the unexpected changes.
