Feedback:

George and his team were very helpful in designing and building a small but very useful piece of software for us. Their service is excellent and prices reasonable.

Feedback:

After having been told I had performed particularly well at an interview, I was quite looking forward to seeing what I could contribute to the client I had been assigned, over the 11 months I planned to be there. Since in most jobs, the first day is spent mostly getting set up, I did not consider it a particularly unfortunate day to have a mild hangover - especially for a workplace that likes to masquerade behind a laid-back, friendly atmosphere (in my previous job, it took over a week to get all of the necessary permissions - and that was considered to be on the quicker side). And since I had not been asked any remotely challenging questions at the interview, and received enthusiastic feedback, I imagined my position was safe enough.Apparently I was mistaken on both counts: I was let go on the first day with no warning whatsoever, despite trying to insist that I was in fact serious about the job, and attempting to find a compromise that would work. It's not even the case that I was really under-achieving: in my five hours in the office, I had done around three quarters of a 4-hour Git class, got settled in, and stared to familiarise myself with a new Python library. Not the best going, but hardly what I would call sackable either.I really get the feeling that applicants were taken for a ride here. I was 100% straight with the manager that this was my 2nd choice (I was still waiting for an interview for a data scientist position at the point of being made an offer), and made it crystal clear that he should have given the place to his 2nd choice candidate if I could not get back to him and accept the offer before they finished their bootcamp. This was in the interest of fairness for all parties - but I suppose you can't expect that to be reciprocated in this world.I suspect other candidates were lied to, which is why I'd feel remiss not to share this experience. I can only hope that other applicant dodged the bullet and has taken their skills elsewhere. It's a shame, because I was looking forward to learning more about how I could apply ML and NLP (which, strangely, were not discussed at the interview, despite ML featuring heavily in my CV and the client having 'AI' in their name) to the client's software. Considering many of the skills I'll be picking up in preparation for PhD courses I'll be applying to (for example, text mining/NLP applications in personalised medicine) would have involved many of the same skills as the client's work, it could have been a highly fortunate match I may have spent much of my free time sharpening my skills on. Ah well.
