Why Is It Important To Study Literature?

Why do we need to study literature? The answer to this question can be sought for a very long time, but we cannot come to an unambiguous conclusion. No matter who you are a student, an executive running the best custom dissertation services or a wise old man this question may haunt you all the time. However, is it really that important?

Someone believes that the study of it is necessary for personal education, for someone it is leisure, someone it is necessary to create a model of behavior in certain situations, but what if you look deeper?

Importance Of Studying Literature

Let us start by thinking about whether literature is needed. What it gives us? If we look at it from a point of view of information contained therein, it is probably of little use. Often books contain information about the lives of people in the past.

Read the history and you will get much more accurate, diverse and relatively reliable information. Books describe relationships between people. Read the psychology books and you will get a more accurate, more informed description of the various aspects of human relationships.

Literature has no advantage over science in the field of transmission of useful information, that is, information that can be useful in life. But there are such kinds of literature as poems and fairy tales, which do not contain any useful information. Suppose that such books, without useful information, are needed for entertainment but here it does not go in any comparison with entertainment spaces.

Any show will shut up any entertainment books belt. And pop singles are much more entertaining than poetry. Even more striking is the fact that literature has stood the test of time and is still necessary for humanity.

What does not allow it to die even nowadays, when the number of writing (if you count the Internet-bloggers) more than the number of readers? If we consider utilitarian benefit, as we have already said, we will not explain anything. Considering entertainment books, we can say that the book has the advantage that the reader is free to imagine what he read only as he wants and is free to read at the pace at which he wants, and not what he imposes alternative entertainment - cinema and television, for example, but not all books are entertaining.

The solution is that some of the literature is Literature. That is art. Art has a remarkable quality it creates something more than a set of information about human relations and historical realities.

Each work of art creates a kind of the world with its own, sometimes completely implausible and absurd, laws, but logical within the limits of this work. And this integrity is known only by a sense of belonging, in other words, empathy. That is why from the War and Peace Leo Tolstoy learn much more about the war of 1812 than from the textbook of history.

Reading the novel, we find ourselves in the described time, and not only understand but also remember some peculiarities of relations between people who were at that time. In addition, such artwork describes the universal relations between people, those that do not change over time. Classic books are eternal precisely because they reveal the universal moments of human relationships that do not depend on the change of clothes.

And most importantly, we cannot just read about it, as in the textbook of psychology, but to acquire some internal experience, not even having a similar in real life. Literature directly affects the inner world, the soul. We know that some books have a huge public resonance because millions of people respond to their content.

The simplest example is Uncle Toms Cabin, which played a significant role in abolishing slavery in America.

How Do Books Help A Persons Growth And Development?

In the past centuries, it was believed that man should develop his inner world, should develop spiritually. In the education of the inner world, books have always given the greatest place, as it is the only one of the arts can describe not only the finest shades of experiences but also the finest shades of thought - its possibilities are almost limitless. This is one of the reasons for studying Literature. The second reason is that it is part of the intellectual heritage of humanity, which must not be lost.

Those suffering and joy, insights and failures, which our ancestors have left for us in Literature, should remain important for everyone. We should never forget about our past and culture! In conclusion, we want to say that this question will be eternal and people will ask themselves this question after years and years after.

There are many opinions on this topic. Nevertheless, the one thing is more important than asking ourselves we still read, write and love Literature as we did many years before. And we will always need to study Literature to keep that human part of us.
