This factory is astonishing in its scope and size. It is also a historic structure, as the first manufacturer of Portland cement in Africa (Portland cement hardens under water - the Romans had made a previous type of cement in Egypt and elsewhere over 2000 years ago)The company started on this site in 1892 as Eerste Fabrieken Zement, a licensed monopoly (In those days the industrial area here was called Eerste Fabrieken, and to build a factory you bought a "concession" from the Government ensuring that you had a monopoly - a kind of legal bribery). After the monopoly was removed, the name changed to Pretoria Portland Cement Ltd., but the factory kept growing. (Eg. in my youth there was only one chimney, now there are two. The site is also much bigger).This factory produces most of the cement used in South Africa, and the company has built other factories in other African countries. If you see concrete being poured on a construction project, the cement in there very probably came from here.The industrial process is rather simple: The plant receives limestone, which is baked at a high temperature to remove the water of crystallisation. The resulting calcium oxide and silicon oxide are mixed with calcium sulphate(hardening rate regulator), other metal oxides, and fly ash(diluent), then milled to give a fine homogeneous powder, which is decanted into a silo for later collection by dry bulk carriers, as well as putting into bags for small scale use.If you can get to see this process, you will marvel at the production of a substance which is the foundation of both your house and the industrial society we inhabit.May this plant still be here in 100 years' time!
