My life partner suffered a stroke and admitted to intensive care unit at the hospital without having a Living trust done. I was making arrangements with Hospice for bringing him home so I could take care of him rather than going to a nursing facility. That's how I learned I could not make any decisions regarding his healthcare since we were not married and California does not recognize common law marriage. He had an estranged son living in another state who would not come to California to see his father in the hospital but made the decision over the phone to take his father off all nutritional support put him on a DNR list move out of intensive care to a medical floor to wait for him to die. He lived twelve days and during this stressful time I suffered a TIA (small stroke) while I was recovering from my broken heart in poor health I was served with a lawsuit from his estranged son.
